Interested in singing with the Choir?

The Choir rehearses every other Thursday night between mid-August and mid-June. Rehearsals resume for this church year on August 21, 2025! Please contact Jen if you’re interested in singing this fall.

If you have a musical talent we haven’t mentioned (including instrumentalists or singers who would like to participate occasionally) and you’re interested in music ministry, please reach out to Music Director, Jen Hayman, at musicdirector@uucss.org

Music Program

At UUCSS, music is at the heart
of worship and of our life as a congregation.

Rousing choral repertoire, dynamical instrumental music, and stirring congregational singing reflect our values, our joy, and our hope: meeting the moment we live in. This means that on any given Sunday, you can expect to hear anything from art songs to protest songs to contemporary Scandinavian yoiks to Springsteen to Kirk Franklin and beyond.

Our choir performs twice each month from September through June and is open to anyone interested in performing great choral music of the past and present, from many sources and traditions. Singing in the choir is a rich and rewarding way to get involved with the church and to be a part of a heart-centered “community within a community.”

About Music Director, Jen Hayman

Jen Hayman is an accomplished Asian American choral conductor, educator, singer, and pianist who believes in the power of music to change lives and culture. Jen led a successful flash mob for voting rights on the steps of the Supreme Court, created a spontaneous 700-voice choir for a Solidarity Sing on the evening of the Women’s March in 2017, and continues to create beauty in unexpected places. Her work has been featured on the Huffington Post, Upworthy.com, the Rachel Maddow Show and National Public Radio. She has performed for two Supreme Court justices and alongside countless civil rights and social justice leaders.

Jen has been a music leader in Unitarian Universalism for nearly 20 years, serving congregations in Philadelphia (PA), Washington (DC), Arlington (VA), and Cambridge (MA). She is currently the President of the Association for UU Music Ministries (AUUMM). She is also director of women’s vocal group, bēheld, and the newly formed Sound and Vision Youth Chorus: a social justice youth choir based in Montgomery County.

In her spare time, Jen can be found thrift shopping for retro home goods, trying to coordinate red, orange, and turquoise in the same outfit, and having dance parties with her husband, Rob, and son, Simon.

All Are Welcome!
