Social Action (Ways to make a difference)

Community Based Shelter
Backgound

The CBS (Community Based Shelter), a program of the Community Ministry of Montgomery County, has been serving homeless people since 1983. It provides residence, food, counseling, job placement, and other rehabilitative services for individuals who are attempting to return to a self-supporting and independent life.

Currently there are up to 35 men and women temporarily residing at the Rockville facility who are either hooked up with professional services or treatment programs during the day and come "home" to the Shelter or who are in a recuperative care program and need room and board all day. CBS relies completely on the generous contributions of over 60 congregations and community groups for all the meals, kitchen supplies, staffing assistance and sometimes linens. Usually the assignment for the volunteer organization lasts for an entire week.

For one week each year UUCSS prepares, delivers and serves food at the shelter in Rockville. This year (2001) UUCSS will be running the Shelter from May 20th through May 25th.
