Curriculum 2006-2007

RE Classes for Children and Youth

Our overall focus this year will be world religions with a Judeo/Christian focus. We look forward to rich conversations and activities that will explore faith, values, and our seven Unitarian Universalist Principles. Many of our children will be learning about famous Unitarian Universalists, everyone will be exploring thier own beliefs.

NOTE: Complete materials for each curriculum may be reviewed in the Religious Education office.

Nursery and Toddler Room

Programming for our youngest ages is led by 2 paid professional staff and a team of church volunteers. Most of the time is spent doing unstructured play, with optional craft projects, reading time, and snack. Our focus on a warm, consistent environment makes this room a welcoming place for all.

Preschool Class

Celebrating Me and My World
This full-year curriculum celebrates the wondrous qualities of children and the animals, objects, and people around them. It works to provide preschoolers with experiences and opportunities to grow in trust and caring and to develop their self-identity and sense of connectedness with all of life. At this age, the curriculm is supplemented by time for unstructured play and exploration.

Kindergarten, Grades 1 and 2

Super Heroes- Bible People
This curriculum is a values-based curriculum for primary aged children using stories about people from the Jewish and Christian Bibles. It introduces children to the stories of people in the Bible who acted with courage and wisdom in their attempts to lead their lives fully and make the world a better place. It shows how the lives of these people confirm the Principles of Unitarian Universalism. It encourages children to lead their own lives fully and to use their own positive "superpowers" as they interact with the world around them to grow both spiritually and ethically.

Grades 3, 4 and 5

Timeless Themes
This curriculum draws stories from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible, introducing children to religious literature that is central to North American culture and to Unitarian Universalist heritage. Children become familiar with the timeless themes of transcendent power, human responsibility, love of freedom, speaking out against injustice, respect for the beliefs of others, love of one's neighbor, and forgiveness. The Bible stories are taught from a UU value structure.

Grades 6, 7 and 8

Neighboring Faiths
This yearlong curriculum helps youth learn about their own faith and other faith traditions through interactive experience such as field trips and interviews. These encounters with other religions are given meaning through periods of reflection and discussion about Unitarian Universalist and personal beliefs and values. This program is always a huge hit!

Grades 9 - 12 Young Religious Unitarian Universalists (YRUU)

Self Guided Programming
Our Sr. High youth group does a variety of self-directed activities pulling from the five components of balanced youth programming: Leadership, Learning, Community Building, Social Action, and Worship. With the support of volunteer youth advisors, they engage in rich dialogues, fun activities, and thoughtful action on Sunday mornings and beyond.
