The memorial quilts
serve as continuing record to remind us of those who were
here before us and helped to create this community. The quilts
serve also as objects for contemplation. They were a gift
from the designer, Daisy Grubbs, in memory of her son, Charles
Halstrick. The names of those who helped with the quilting
are listed on wall plaques beside or below the panels. |
Names of church members who died before 1997 appear on “The
Flaming Chalice” and “Seascape.” “Constellations” is
a memorial to sons and daughters of members whether that child
was a member or not.
Because the name spaces on “The Blue Quilts” are
full, “The Windows Series” carries on our memorial
tradition. Each quilt is a scene from our gardens with a Native
American proverb as an epitaph. Family or friends of a member who
dies may embroider that person’s name on any one of the four “Window” quilts.
More names will be added to these until the lower sections are
full.
To add a name contact the Commemorative Committee. On a Sunday
after the service one of the quilts can be taken down, the embroidery
done then and there, About the Quilts and the quilt rehung immediately.
There is a space of 1½" x 7½" for each
name. Any colors and designs can be
used for names on the “Window” quilts. On “Constellations” the
names are in white cross stitch as though they were constellations.
There is no fee for putting a name on a quilt.
