The gardens were started in the 1950s with the construction
of the first buildings. All that remains of that early planting
is the row of evergreens along New Hampshire Ave. started
as seedlings by children in the Sunday School and the row
of Japanese cherries along Oaklawn Drive. At the beginning
of construction of the new sanctuary in 1991, which took several
years, the Meditation Garden was started in memory of Duncan
Ferguson. Every year since then has seen major additions to
the gardens. Many plants are immature, but the general plan
is becoming clear. Visitors are always welcome.
All areas of the property open to cultivation have been mapped
and divided into 51 plots varying in size from very small to fairly
large. Some have plantings already developed. Others need to be
designed. Many of these have been 'adopted' by friends and members
of the congregation. The rest are available for adoption. Each section
has its own map listing plants, care requirements, and a timetable
of expected bloom. Tools and supplies are available on site.
Manual
An illustrated manual showing the classification, cultural requirements,
bloom time, methods of propagation, etc. of each plant in the inventory
is currently being prepared and will eventually be available to
our gardeners and to visitors in the church library.
