Church History In Brief

In Brief

UUCSS was founded in 1952, as the last Universalist extension effort in the US, and was the first Church to include both Unitarian and Universalist in its name. We started in a member's living room, then used the nearby public school. With the help of the Universalist Church of America, we the bought property we now enjoy and moved into the only building on the property, a converted stable. We now have four buildings, including a beautiful new sanctuary. (The YRUU Young Religious Unitarian Universalists, the high school youth group, still uses the stable.)

The UUCSS is a medium-sized UU church located three blocks north of the Washington Beltway in Silver Spring, Maryland.

UUCSS is one of 25 UU congregations in the Washington, DC area. There are over 270 members of the Church, and it is growing. Recently, we had an experienced and scholarly Interim Minister, Rev. Kerry Mueller, and now have a really wonderful settled minister, Rev. Elizabeth (Liz) Lerner. We also have a Director of Religious Education, Mandy Keithan.
