General

Welcome to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring mailing list!

This is an unmoderated group for members and friends of UUCSS. We rely on you to use good netiquette and wish you to remember that this is not a secure service.

You can post a message to uucss@yahoogroups.com and it will be distributed to every member of the group.

  • Don’t post anything you wouldn’t want anyone in church or anywhere around the globe to read. While the membership is restricted, email is never 100% private.
  • Do share ideas, articles, news, snippets, food for thought, and discussions around UUism.
  • Do post church announcements, questions, and opinions you have about our church. Remember that most members are not subscribed to this list and your announcements won't reach everyone.
  • Don’t discuss and negotiate critical church business and process:
    1. because it will exclude most members—remember that our church is democratic;
    2. because many join this list because it is fun and interesting. Not every member wants to be a leader or wants to be involved in church business.

Recommendation: If you write something because you’re upset, wait 24 hours before clicking the Send button. Re-read your e-mail, then decide whether your really want to send it or not.

Attachments will be discarded

An email you send to uucss@yahoogroups.com with an attachment will reach the group without the attachment. In place of the attachment you will see the following text:

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

This setting to prevents viruses from getting into your email. To send someone a file, ask them first for permission, then send it to them directly to their email address.

To quote or not to quote?
Delete original message and footers when replying

When you reply to a Yahoo! Groups email, please delete the quoted message along with the footers. You may include a small part just so that one can make sense of what you're responding to.

Reasons:

  1. Those who receive the daily digest will have to scroll through many old messages and advertising footers just to find the new message.
  2. This method reduces bandwidth.

“Email Messages,” “Daily Digest,”
& “Web Only/No Mail” Options

If the number of emails coming into your box has been more than you can handle or care for, you have two other options:

  1. Choose the DAILY DIGEST. You'll receive only one email that includes all messages posted that day.
  2. Choose WEB ONLY/NO MAIL option. Then use your internet browser to read messages whenever you want. You don't have to follow up regularly or bother to delete messages you don't care to read. Just log in at your convenience—today, in a month, or in six months, and read the current or archived messages

Go to http://www.yahoogroups.com/mygroups to set your mail options. You'll need to register the first time you go there.

To Digest Users: Subject line

When you reply to messages, please change the subject line from “Digest Number ###” to a subject that reflects the topic of the email.

To Everyone: Subject line

A subject that reflects the content of the email makes it easier to sift through email and delete what is not of interest based on the subject line..

  • Please make sure you fill out the subject line.
  • If the subject of the thread changes, then change the subject. Many email users will often delete an email based on the subject, not the content.  If your content is interesting but the subject refers to something else, you might lose some readers.

Going on vacation?

You don't have to unsusbscribe. You can change your settings with Yahoo Groups to receive no emails. The option reads “Web Only/No Mail.” You can do so by going to http://www.yahoogroups.com/mygroups and registering (if you haven't registered already) then change your account.

Reply to inidividual or to uucss@yahoogroups.com?

When you reply to a an email on the UUCSS-Yahoo Groups mailing list, it will go to the original sender. If you want everyone on the list to read your response, then send your response to uucss@yahoogroups.com.

Virus alerts: preventing hoaxes from spreading

While you won’t receive any virus through UUCSS-Yahoo Groups because attachments are disabled, you might someday receive a virus alert and feel that you must announce it to all the members of the list out of concern.

If you receive such an alert, check whether it is a virus or a hoax before posting a warning to the list. There are two good sites:

If you can’t find the virus on either site, contact Symantec or McAfee and inquire whether the virus alert you heard of is a serious threat or a hoax before posting any virus alerts. Then, you may sent a message to UUCSS-Yahoo Groups list.

Petitions and chainletters not permitted

Thousands of online petitions and chainletters are hoaxes. You might receive what looks like a very serious letter with a very serious and worrisome issue, along with a request to add your email to it and  to forward it to a certain number of people you know. Please do not forward such petitions to this list.

You may post letter writing petitions that you wrote or from sources you’re absolutely certain are reliable.
