Denominational Affairs

The Denominational Affairs Committee encourages our congregation's interest in and support of the activities of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), the Joseph Priestly District (JPD), and the Greater Washington Association of UU Congregations. These groups sponsor many beneficial programs, such as those listed to the right. 

Meetings: UUCSS is entitled to two representatives at GWA Council meetings, which occur about 8 times a year on Sunday afternoons at local UU churches, after the Sunday service and a light lunch. 

Support: GWA, JPD, and UUA are supported by dues assessed on each congregation in their respective regions according to size. Some portion of dues must be paid for a church to maintain voting rights in each organization. For many years UUCSS was a full-paying congregation but in recent years budget constraints and our own needs have limited our contributions.

Programs

• UUA General Assembly, at which we are entitled to several delegates; 
• JPD conferences and leadership training days; 
• JPD Chalice Lighters program to give grants to support and encourage new and existing congregations; 
• JPD Interweave Chapter to serve the needs of lesbian, gay, and bisexual UUs; 
• WOMUUNCIRCLE; 
• CAMPUUS, the JPD Campus Ministry Program for our college members; 
• Beacon House, a community ministry serving the Edgewood Terrace neighborhood; 
• Unitarian Universalist Affordable Housing Corporation (UUAHC), a community development loan fund; 
• and several other GWA social justice activities. 

Participation

If you are interested in serving on the Denominational Affairs Committee, representing UUCSS at GWA meetings, being the conduit to the congregation for JPD or UUA news and activities, or serving as liason to a particular JPD or GWA sponsored program, please contact our Program VP and Coucil Chair.
