Our Organization

The Board of Trustees

The UUCSS Board of Trustees is elected by the Congregation and oversees the operation of our Church in accordance with the UUCSS Constitution. The Board guides the implementation of long-term goals and policy and is legally responsible for the fiscal operations of the church.

The Board consists of:

  • President
  • Vice President for Planning
  • Vice President for Programs
  • Vice President for Finance
  • Vice President for Personnel
  • Secretary, and
  • three At Large Members, all elected to staggered three-year terms.

Day to day administrative duties are handled by the Chair, the Treasurer and the Collector.

Sub-committees include:

Nominating Committee

Composed of five people elected by the congregation to serve two-year terms, the committee nominates candidates to fill all of the elected positions in the church organization. The committee selects its chair from among these individuals.

Personnel Committee

Works with the Chief of Staff (currently the Parish Minister) to administer personnel policies for all paid staff except ordained ministers called by the congregation, including hiring, compensation recommendations, position descriptions, terms of employment, maintaining an employee handbook, annual performance evaluations, employee benefits, evaluating staffing needs, assisting in resolving employee grievances, and other personnel matters.

Planning Committee

Studies, reviews, and proposes changes to the church goals and mission, constitution, and policy documents. Plans and conducts an annual Board/Council retreat. The Council and the planning committee implement and change, as required, the strategic plan. The chair of the committee is the Planning Vice-President of the Board, and its members are the three At-Large Board members.

Plans fun events to promote fellowship and unity among our church members, including regular annual church events such as Fall and Spring Picnics, Seder dinner, Christmas Eve Reception.

Supports the ministers and staff in performing the administrative functions of the church. The committee is responsible for improving office procedures and making decisions about purchases, replacements, repairs and maintenance of all office equipment and computers.

Adult Religious Education CommitteeAdultRE@uucss.org

Provides opportunities for lifelong faith development. Adult RE Programming nurtures the religious and spiritual dimensions of our lives as well as the development and exercise of ethics and values. Plans, organizes, publicizes, administers, and evaluates adult programming at the church. This programming includes classes, workshops, and other activities that promote personal and spiritual growth, which are provided in supportive small groups within the church community.

Childcare committee members help other committees arrange the childcare they need to assure the safety of our wee ones and allow parents to participate in our social events.  They help arrange childcare for all-church events, such as the auction, the annual meeting, fellowship dinner, and Suite Treat.

Deaf Access Committee, DAC@uucss.org

Coordinates efforts to provide access and create a welcoming environment for the Deaf community by scheduling interpreters for Sunday services, creating opportunities for the congregation to learn more about ASL and Deaf Culture, helping to promote UUCSS to the Deaf community, advising church leaders on matters regarding access for Deaf individuals, and providing support to existing committees as they incorporate services to the Deaf community.  You don’t need to sign to serve on the committee!

 

Green Sanctuary Committee, GlobalWarming@uucss.org

The Green Sanctuary Committee (formerly the Global Warming Study/Action Group) coordinates church-wide efforts to live out the UU seventh principle to 'respect the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.'  Currently, the committee oversees 12 projects to earn certification as a Green Sanctuary.  The projects influence worship and music, religious education, Earth justice activities, and sustainable living in our homes and the congregational buildings.

Committed to integrating both new and experienced members into the life of UUCSS.  Works closely with the Sunday Support teams to ensure visitors are made to feel welcome. Sponsors “Pathways to Membership” orientation classes, providing visitors a chance to learn more about Unitarian Universalism, UUCSS and our faith community.  Organizes recognition ceremonies and welcoming receptions for new members. Communicates with new members about special church events and encourages their active participation in all aspects of our community.  Publishes Membership Directory and Resource Guide.

Music Committee, Music@uucss.org

Supports and promotes the musical life of the church, our Music Director and accompanist.  Music for Sunday services, special services and special church events may be overseen or assisted by the music committee.  The Music Committee sponsors concerts to enrich the life of the church and the local community, including its annual fund-raiser Suite Treat Café.

The Sanctuary Singers, our church choir, sings for Sunday services approximately every other week, and for certain other special occasions in the church year.  All are invited to join the choir which rehearses on Thursday evenings at 7:30 in the Sanctuary.

Publicizes UUCSS, its belief systems, programs and activities to the broader community in order to attract potential new members. Outreach oversees the church website, represents UUCSS at local fairs and parades, advertises to area publications, and publicizes UUCSS events and UUCSS participation in area causes.

Monitors the requirements for maintenance, renovation and improvement of buildings and grounds. Working closely with the sexton, supervises and organizes the maintenance of church property. Manages the attractiveness of the church facility, gardens, and grounds. Helps the church to be energy-efficient and environmentally responsible.

The committee works with our Director of Religious Education to offer religious education classes and programs that uphold and promote our UU Principles and Purposes. We endeavor to create a nurturing and supportive environment that celebrates the worth and uniqueness of each child and stimulates, encourages, considers, and respects all religious questions.

LGBTQA Equality Task Force
lgbtqa@uucss.org
The LGBTQA (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, questioning & allies) Equality Task Force advocates for non-discrimination, marriage equality, and related LGBTQA issues at the federal, state, and county levels. The Task Force partners with other LGBTQA advocacy groups and organizes congregation members to work towards equal protection in all matters governed by civil law. The Task Force educates UUCSS members about becoming welcoming allies to LGBTQA members of UUCSS & the wider community.

Shepherd’s Table
UUCSS has been a regular partner with Shepherd’s Table since it opened in Silver Spring 25 years ago. Shepherd’s Table provides help to homeless people and others in need. UUCSS volunteers work together to prepare and serve food at Shepherd’s Table once a month.
Shepherd’s Table is located at 8210A Colonial Lane, right off Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring
[Note: Teens over 16 can volunteer on their own; 15 year olds can come accompanied by an adult.]

So Others Might Eat, (S.O.M.E.)
SOME has served DC’s homeless and poor citizens for over 40 years. UUCSS volunteers donate coffee, green vegetables, and fruit once a month. UUCSS volunteers sign up to donate food every other month, or drive the food over -- which really only amounts to driving on average once a year.

Beacon House
Founded in 1991 by Reverend Donald E. Robinson, a Unitarian Universalist (UU) Minister, Beacon House is a neighborhood-based organization that supports at-risk youth and families of the Edgewood Terrace community in D.C. Beacon House offers educational, cultural, recreational, and athletic programs. UUCSS members support Beacon House by tutoring in their after-school programs, offering field trips, and more.

The church gives one Sunday’s collection plate each month to a charitable organization whose mission fits with the goals and values of the church.

Church Life Involvement Committee, Volunteer@uucss.org

The Church Life Involvement Committee supports church leaders and volunteers as they attend to the health of their committees and activities, offering support with recruiting and orienting new members, planning for transitions in leadership, and using the portfolios and charters to distribute the work.

Worship Services Committee, Worship@uucss.org

Oversees the production of consistent and meaningful worship services throughout the year by coordinating with the minister, minister of religious education, music director, deaf access committee, and congregation. Creates worship services when the minister is absent from the pulpit, including the summer services.
